Cosmic Legends: The Younger Generation

CLotU comes with a standard “superhero world” filled with expies of existing characters who you can use if you don’t want to make your own or use an existing superhero universe.

The primary heroes in the CLU are the Cosmic Legends of the Universe and they’re analogues of the Avengers and the Justice League.

The next generation down from the Cosmic Legends are the Junior Legends of America and they’re analogous to the Teen Titans, New Mutants, and Young Avengers.

The most prominent JLA members – now former JLA members as they’ve joined the Cosmic Legends team – are Energy Boy and Vespa 2.0.

Energy Boy

Energy Boy’s power is: he’s made of energy. It’s not his fault, really, but his mom’s; she gained powers similar to his but became the supervillain Neutrino.

After the accident that gave them both powers, Energy Boy was taken in by Hazel Montgomery, the first hero named Vespa. Del Thompson was raised alongside Vespa’s child Lin Montgomery, and both were the first attendees of Technopolis Academy, a joint project of N.O.V.A. Labs, A.L.E.R.T., and the Cosmic Legends, where young people were trained to use their unique talents as teenage superheroes.

Bug I

Lin Montgomery created a suit of armor similar to their mother’s and became Bug, the Binary Bantling, a tech-based hero with super-hacking abilities. After Hazel Montgomery was killed, Lin adopted the name Vespa 2.0 to carry on her legacy.

Kaleidoscope Kidd

Like Energy Boy, the Kaleidoscope Kidd is also the son of a super-villain; in this case, the Teleidoscopic Man of Villains, Inc. Wanting to make up for his father’s crimes, Jason uses the holographic illusion-casting powers he inherited to make the world a better place. Del Thompson considers Jason his best friend, and for a while the Kaleidoscope Kidd dated Lin Montgomery, until she graduated from Techno-A.

Glytch

Not everyone who attended Technopolis Academy decided to follow a heroic path, and Glytch the Cyber-Surfer of Crime is the most notorious example. Once one of Lin Montgomery’s closest friends, they start committing crimes even while attending Techno-A; Glytch gave Villains Inc. access to the Academy computers which let them override the school’s security and tap into both the A.L.E.R.T. and Cosmic Legends databases.

Glytch would have gotten away with it, too, except they were discovered by teen aquatic hero Marlinspike. To try to hide their perfidity, Glytch murdered Marlin, although his absence from class was what prompted Energy Boy, Kaleidoscope Kidd, and Bug to investigate the source of strange energy surges in the Academy’s network and power grid.

Glytch has since gone on to become a full member of Villains, Inc., and is an arch-enemy to both Vespa 2.0 and the Head Librarian.

Gloom

Gloom’s powers allow her to create darkness and manifest someone’s deepest fears as nightmarish, shadowy telepathic projections. This power, coupled with her unfriendly personality, made her feel unwelcome with the rest of the student body. Eventually she resigned from Techno-A and her current whereabouts are unknown – as well as how she is using those powers, whether for good or evil.

Other Academy Students

Lin’s friend Mar Ferrandis became the second Bug, and joined the Cosmic Legends after graduating from the Academy. He’s retired now and works in private industry, after realizing he was becoming jaded due to super-heroics.

Marlinspike, as previously mentioned, possessed water-controlling powers and worked closely with Riptide of the Cosmic Legends. Tragically, Marlin was murdered by Glytch before he could fully master his powers.

Besides Energy Boy, Vespa 2.0, the Kaleidoscope Kidd, and Bug II, the young superheroine Lucky Star is the only Techno-A graduate of note. While at the Academy, she learned to use her probability-manipulation powers both defensively and offensively, and still fights crime to this day in her home city of St. Louis, Missouri.

Other Young Heroes and Villains

Not all young supers choose to attend Technopolis Academy. Igneia Vulcanor, the younger sister of Obsidius Rex, chose to strike out on her own and joined Villains, Inc.

My’Rinn To’Rezz, the child of one of Titan’s siblings, also declined to attend the Academy, since their Saturnian training was even more comprehensive than anything offered on Earth. They now serve as a member of the Junior Legends of America, under the code-name Tethys, alongside Kaleidoscope Kidd and other young heroes.

Game Stats

Energy Boy’s and Vespa 2.0’s stats are listed in the core Cosmic Legends rulebook; Energy Boy is the archetypal Dynamo, while Lin Montgomery is the Inventor sample character. Glytch and Igneia are statted as members of Villains, Inc.

Marlinspike was a Shaper, and Gloom is a Psychic. Tethys, like Titan, has the Paragon class, and Kaleidoscope Kidd is also a Psychic.
